What are the testing fees?

The knowledge test is $40 and the skills/driving test is $50.

Use of a school car is available for an additional fee.

Walk-In Testing

Knowledge testing (car, motorcycle, sidecar/trike) may be available at our Tacoma location during regular business hours Monday - Friday from 9am - 4:30pm, excluding holidays.

Prior to testing with us for your driver license (knowledge or skills) you must be registered with the WA DOL License eXpress. You can do this when you show up for testing, or you can save time and do it in advance — WA DOL License eXpress.

What if I don't pass the tests?

You can retest at any time including the same day if you are ready to do so.  Normal testing fees apply.

What types of questions are on the knowledge test?

The WA Department of Licensing has a practice test on their web site with 5 sample questions. Go to the DOL web site for the practice test. You can also read the WA Driver Guide at the DOL web site (available in multiple languages).

Do I need my own vehicle for the skills test?

No, however the vehicle must be compliant with all WA laws applicable - including registration and insurance.  Go to our Terms & Conditions page for full skills test requirements.

If you don't have a vehicle meeting this criteria you may use a school car for an additional fee of $20.

I've made an appointment, but where do I find out the details?

After making an appointment and paying the fee you'll be sent (by email most of the time) information about where to go, when to check in, what to expect, and some basic policies. You can Contact Us if you have any questions or concerns. Please read the Terms & Conditions for full details.

• You must arrive on time for your appointment. Late arrivals may not be allowed to test.
• You must bring valid photo identification (driver license, permit, state identification card, or passport)

Can I cancel or reschedule my testing appointment?

License testing appointments are non-refundable.

Yes, if you provide us 72 hours or more notice you are eligible to reschedule without an additional fee. If you provide us less than 72 hours notice, or do not show for your testing appointment, you can reschedule but an additional fee will apply. You must call our office (253-770-8888) during regular business hours to cancel or reschedule. Please read the Terms & Conditions for additional information.

Are you a Department of Licensing office?

Puget Sound Safety is an authorized license testing provider for the Washington Department of Licensing. We are not a DOL office and only offer testing services. While some DOL offices still have testing services available, if your local DOL office does not provide testing services you can use us for that service.

Do you offer Driver Training Courses?

Yes, Puget Sound Safety (PSS) Driving School offers driver training courses. Go to the PSS Driving School web site.

The process of getting your WA Driver License varies depending on your age. There are options for teens 15-17 years old, adults 18 years and older, along with options for instruction permits too. Read the details at the WA DOL web site.
